The E ect of Pollution on Labor Supply: Evidence from a Natural Experiment in Mexico City∗

چکیده
Moderate e ects of pollution on health may exert an important in uence on labor market decisions. We exploit exogenous variation in pollution due to the closure of a large re nery in Mexico City to understand how pollution impacts labor supply. The closure led to an 8 percent decline in pollution in the surrounding neighborhoods. We nd that a one percent increase in sulfur dioxide results in a 0.72 percent decrease in the hours worked. The e ects do not appear to be driven by labor demand shocks nor di erential migration as a result of the closure in the areas located near the re nery.

متن کاملMedium- and long-term consequences of pollution on labor supply: evidence from Indonesia
We use a natural experiment in Indonesia to study the mediumand long-term effects of air pollution on labor supply. We find that exposure to air pollution reduces hours worked and while the medium-term effects are larger in magnitude, some effects do persist in the long term. More interestingly, we are able to provide some insight regarding the underlying channels that contribute to the reduced...
متن کاملA Policy Analysis on the Proactive Prevention of Chronic Disease: Learnings from the Initial Implementation of Integrated Measurement for Early Detection (MIDO)
Mexico, like many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), faces an epidemic of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), specifically diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and lipid disorders. Many people with these NCDs may not be aware that they have a disease, pointing to the need for broader screening programs. The traditional prevention policy in Mexico was based on screening with a paper-bas...
متن کاملEstimating Marginal Treatment E¤ects of Transfer Programs on Labor Supply
The standard static model of the e¤ect of welfare program participation on labor supply is estimated allowing the e¤ect of participation to be heterogeneous in the population and allowing the program participation decision to be endogenous and to exhibit incomplete takeup. Nonparametric methods are used to estimate the distribution of the marginal treatment e¤ect over the range of participation...
